Joining and Playing an RP
Step 1-Find an RP to join
What's the point of joining an RP if its subject bores you to tears? You need to join an RP that interests you, or it won't be any fun! So, what do you like? Animals? Fantasy? Action? Decide what kind of RP interests you the most. Then, look for it in the various RP sections. You may not see the exact RP you want, but you can always choose something similar. If you wanted to play an RP about riding, and the only one that's available is a wild horse RP, challenge yourself! And if there's nothing you like, create your own RP!
You'll also want to join an RP that seems well planned. Is there a unique, interesting plot? Are there clear guidelines and rules for the posters, to make sure things don't get out of hand? Did the creator take time to come up with ideas for their RP, and type the post neatly? If you answered no to some of these questions, it may not be the best RP to join.
Step 2-Make your character
This is the part where you get to use your imagination. Challenge yourself to think of a new and interesting character. First, you'll need to think of the basics.
Basic Stuff- Wolf, human, horse? What is your character, and what breed? Think of the gender and age.
General Personality- Is your character a total grouch, or loving and sweet? Are they so outgoing and friendly it gets annoying, or are they super shy? Choose a personality that's unique and fairly easy to work with, then stick with it. If you decide that your character is really mean, don't post and make her hug everyone!
General Appearance- Just the basics. Beautiful, ugly, or somewhere in between? Eye color and hair color? Are they tall or short, skinny or fat?
History- Maybe your character got separated from their family. Perhaps their father was a millionaire, or they were extremely poor growing up. History is important because it effects your character's personality. For example, if your character was attacked by a dog when they were 5, they probably won't love dogs.
Once you know the basics, it's time to "get to know your character." Start really adding details. You don't have to post all of these on their form, but keep them written down or in your brain. These little things will help you and other players be able to picture your character.
Other Info- Obviously, their name. Maybe their race, height, and weight as well.
Likes/Dislike- Decide what your character loves, likes, dislikes, and hates. Maybe your character is a sucker for kittens. Maybe snobby people make them crazy.
Features- What things make your character stand out? Do they have a birth mark in the shape of a heart? Do they have two different colored eyes? Or are they just plain boring?
Family- Decide on your characters past, and present family. Perhaps their parents are divorced. If they're an animal, do they have a mate? Are they looking for one?
After you decide on who your character is, fill out the form. Make it as detailed as possible.
Name: Sara
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Personality: Nice, kind, sweet. Really likes animals.
Appearance: Really tall, skinny. Blue eyes, blond hair.
History: Her parents were doctors. She grew up in France.
Name: Sara
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Personality: Sara is very nice to everyone. She is extremely generous and loves to help people and animals. Sometimes, she can even be too nice, and allows people to take advantage of her. Still, most people get along well with Sara. Despite being friendly, she's also shy and a little unsure of herself. She constantly neglects her own wants in order to help others, which is something she really needs to work on.
Appearance: Sara is very tall, and also skinny. She has long, honey blond hair that is naturally curly and reaches all the way down to her waist. One of her prettiest features are her blue, sparkly eyes. They are big and really stand out against Sara's pale skin.
History: Sara grew up in France and moved to America when she was 13. Both of her parents were very busy doctors. Though she loved them, she didn't get to spend a lot of time with them. She was an only child and often had only her pet dog as a companion.
Now, which form gives you more information? You could probably picture Sara after reading the first form, but it was most likely a basic picture of a tall, nice girl. After reading the detailed second form, you could really picture Sara. I might even add more than that in a real form, and I suggest that you do to. Some RP creators may even have rules that say you must have a certain number of sentences in your form.
Step 3-Post!
Finally, you are ready to begin RPing! Make sure you follow the rules of the site, and the RP rules I listed in my first post. The biggest thing? Follow the plot! It can get annoying when your character just hangs around. If they're a wolf and you are making them hunt, have them get injured! Don't make your character get along with everyone, add a little tension and drama!
Remember to read others' posts. For example, if this was the post above you:
Rover went back to the den after a long day of hunting. He brought back a deer for the whole pack to share, and he very proud of his catch. His pack would have a feast tonight!
Do not post this! It shows that you have not read the post above you, and it's confusing, annoying, and rude!
Molly was starving. No one had brought any food and she could not hunt with her injured leg. The whole pack was waiting for food and Rover still hadn't come back.
Actually, "Rover" did come back, with food. The person that plays Molly ignored the post above them, which is careless and rude. The RP will not go anywhere if people do their own thing and constantly ignore other players.
Generally a post should be 5-7 sentences or more. Some RP creators have rules about posting, so be sure to read and follow them. Also, you should refrain from posting back and forth with another player. Not everyone is on all the time, and leaving them out is selfish.
Good luck! Happy RPing!
Creating Your own RP
So, you think you're ready to start your own RP? Great! If you have RPed before and you are creative, you should definitely start an RP!
Step 1-Think of a plot
RPs are no fun if they don't go anywhere. Try taking a basic idea everyone likes, such as a wolf RP, and giving it a twist! For example, two packs fighting, a mysterious force, having to save someone, etc. You have to get creative! For people to join an RP it has to
A. Be something easy to do and appeal to everyone
B. Be creative and a little challenging
Here are some common RP ideas. Feel free to take some of these and make them your own:
Wild Animals such as wolves
Horse back riding/Wild horses
Vampires/Other Special powers
Pets (dog shows and such)
Medieval Themes
Step 2-Plan it out
A good RP is well planned. It takes me over an hour to plan out my RPs. People won't join if your RP is sloppy, boring, and looks like it took only a few minutes to think of.
Once you have the plot and main idea, start thinking of how exactly it will work. Can players have multiple characters, or just one? Will there be any special rules players will have to follow? Will you hold competitions or make special events/twists happen? Can players earn points or prizes? Does someone eventually win by finding something or doing something? Is it a free for all, or do you have a special plan to guide it? These are all things you will have to consider.
After you have your plan, take the time to type it neatly and provide enough information for everyone. You don't want it to seem confusing. You also don't want it to look sloppy. Present your information in an organized way. Make sure the rules are clear and easy for players to understand and follow.
Here's where to post:
Animal- Wild horses, cats, wolves, etc. belong here.
RPs about domestic animals such as dogs also belong here. Also put RPs about riding, dog shows, etc here.
Human- Any RP that is focuses around humans. A high school, a sport, etc. should be posted here.
Fantasy- RPs about unrealistic things such as vampires, super powers, etc. belong here.
Step 3- Start the RP
Once your RP is up, players will hopefully begin joining! After reviewing their form, let them know right away whether they are accepted or denied. Don't be afraid to politely ask them to put more info on their forms. If someone does not follow the rules, tell them! It's important to be fair, and just because someone is your friend does not mean they should get special treatment.
If there will be ranks, such as in a pack, choose them fairly. Is it first come, first serve? Or will the players vote? Whatever you do, do not choose someone for a high rank because they're your friend or the begged you.
In most cases, the creator can play too, so have fun! Be sure to follow the rules as well and set a good example for other players.
